John O. Bell Named 2001 Recipient of Alfred B. LaGasse Award

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED: HSOC Designation is now law - RSMo Section 227.323

On July 11, 2002, Governor Bob Holden signed HB1141 and SB950 into law. The HSOC Foundation was represented by John Behrer, John Bell, Linda Holekamp, Marilyn Leistner and Kay Sutton. Kathy Love represented Missouri Department of Conservation. Rep. John Griesheimer one of the co-sponsors of our bills served as escort through the day. Larry Eberle secured video and photo-documentation of the bill signing event.

July 11th made for an interesting historical connection. On July 11, 1916 President Woodrow Wilson signed the Federal Road Act. Eighty-six years later Gov. Holden signs our bills into law as important detail to an initiative started long ago.

This successful effort places HSOC in a new context. This Revised MO Statute will give us the means, in part, to do the work we want to do in service to the communities. Thank you to all who gave generously of their time, energy and resources in this effort.

AN ACT: Designation of the Henry Shaw Ozark Corridor

The Board is pleased to receive affirmation of the HSOC mission by our state government!

In January House Bill 1645 was introduced by Representative Griesheimer. Senate Bill 0950 was cosponsored by Senator Gibbons and Senator Klarich. Both bills have received second readings. Letters in support of this legislation are being gathered from the corridor communities as well. Members of the Board will be traveling to Jefferson City in the near future to lobby for passage.

The wish to have a portion of highway I-44 officially identified as the Henry Shaw Ozark Corridor is moving closer to reality. As a consent bill, this piece of legislation cannot have amendments added to it. This keeps our bill pure and straight forward. The HSOC highway designation simply requests legal designation of the name and authorization for signs. It will not limit the corridor in any way. It will not affect planning and zoning, billboards or private property rights

"A Day in the Corridor" Tour

The 2001 fall tour was a huge success on Thursday, October 25th! The weather was a bright, crisp autumn day. Everyone was really excited about the tour with lots of networking going on. We had 13 guests giving a nice representation of communities and positions in the corridor. The bus was a cushy motor coach from 5-Star Limosine of Eureka. Lunch was well-received, too. The picnic lunch, served in boxes by Jubilee Promotions of Fenton, provided an opportunity to relax in the autumn splendor at the Shaw Nature Reserve.

Many thanks to Rich Peterson and Linda Chambers for help with the invitation, Rich for designing the logo stickers at the last minute, Marilyn Leistner for the coffee and donuts at Rte 66 State Park. John Bell for doing everything we ask and Tamie Yegge, John Behrer, Diane Warhover, Kurt Molitor, Wayne Winchester for the great tours.
