Prairie Seed Sowing at Lewis Road & Pacific
On Saturday, December 8, 2001 about 20 volunteers
gathered to plant seeds of wild prairie flowers
& grasses at the Lewis Road Route 66
State Park exit at I44. About five acres
were planted on all four corners of the intersection.
Lunch was provided by Diane Warhover, Director
of Route 66 State Park (THANK YOU!).
In spring of 2002, seedlings of coreopsis, New
England aster, big bluestem, and black-eyed susan
began to sprout. You may have noticed MoDOT mowing
the area during summer, however regular mowing
during the first season is important to suppress
weeds and encourage the developing prairie seedlings.
By 2003 or 2004 prairie plants will be mature
and flowering and maintenance will be reduced
to one mowing per year.
